The Camera In Games, Austin Game Conference Wrap-Up

Pictorial

Over 35 people attended the September meeting which took place at the Art Institute Of Colorado in Denver.

Gary Rosenzweig (Clevermedia) started off the meeting with introductions and announcements.

This month, David Thomas and Gary Haussmann gave a presentation on the use of the camera in games. Their challenge was for Game Developer's to think outside the box when it comes to how we treat cameras in games.

David began the presentation. He touched on the common practice of treating a game camera as a cinematic camera. He explored the classic video game "cameras" that break the mold of real-world cameras, such as those in Asteroids, Gauntlet, Robotron and SimCity.

Next, Gary demoed the program he had created alongside his and David's discussion about video game cameras. In this demo, Gary and David wanted to create a game where the camera had mass and existed as a piece of the game world. Gary had created a world where the camera itself could be used to manipulate the environment.

Afterwards, we had a group discussion about the demo and the points that David and Gary had raised.

Next, David Thomas headed up a brief wrap-up of the Austin Game Conference, highlighting his thoughts and experiences and sharing some of the photos he had shot there.

After the main body of the meeting, the group headed over a few blocks to Pint's Pub & Brewery, who was nice enough to invite our Game Dev group over for free drinks

Our next meeting will take place on October 4th, with details to come.
