Adventures In Modding

Pictorial

Over 50 people attended the October meeting which took place on the 10th floor of the Art Institute.

After introductions, Neil Chismar gave a short introduction to SQuAD, a local Software Quality Association meeting in Denver (see the main page for details).

Following this, Kern Blackurn, who runs the local Gamespace LAN Gaming center, gave a presentation on modding and the "Make Something Unreal" contest tour that his center hosted last month. Topics included such areas as, what modding is, why someone would want to mod, how someone can make money at it, the advantages/disadvantages of modding, and where to obtain more information.

The second presenter of the evening was Brian Holinka, the original designer of the acclaimed Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. Brian talked about how Desert Combat came to be, why he created it, what went right and what went wrong during its development, information about his team and the atmosphere among them, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of working so closely with the fans of the mod.

Following the group presentations, attendees broke into smaller groups to discuss topics of interest, show off their current projects, and network with one another.

Our next meeting will be on November 3rd at 7:00PM at the Art Institute, with topic TBA.
